在航海時，如果遇到大風，而在船只的下風方向有礁石或其他障礙，這種情形很危險，因為船只可能被風吹向下風方向，從而觸礁。這時就需要向上風方向轉舵，使船頭朝向上風，使船只頂風行駛，遠離下風方向的障礙物。船只的這種行駛狀態在古英語中就稱為aloof，由a+loof構成，a=on，表示“處于……狀態”，loof是單詞luff的詞源，表示“船頭朝向上風”。由于船頭朝向上風是為了遠離下風的障礙物，因此aloof又衍生出“遠離的”之意，并進一步衍生出“疏遠的、冷漠的”等比喻之意。現在，人們幾乎只使用aloof的比喻之意，而不再使用它的本意。如在街上看到摔倒的老人時，大部分人的做法就是保持aloof。=aloof[?'lu?f]adj.adv遠離的，避開的，疏遠的，冷漠的，無動于衷的=luff[l?f]vi.頂風行駛vt.使（船頭）朝向上風n頂風行駛
