詞源詞根法

當西班牙殖民者初次踏上美洲大陸，遇到美洲特有的短吻鱷時，就用西班牙語稱其為el lagarto（the lizard，蜥蜴）。后來說英語的殖民者沿用了西班牙人對其的稱謂，在英語中將其稱作lagarto。但在16世紀末期，有些人誤將西班牙語中的定冠詞el也看作該詞的一部分，因此就從西班牙語el lagarto中產(chǎn)生了英語單詞alligator。alligator與crocodile的區(qū)別在于，alligator指的是美洲特有的短吻鱷，而crocodile是一個傳統(tǒng)單詞，用來統(tǒng)稱“鱷魚”。=alligator['æl?ge?t?]n短吻鱷，美洲鱷=crocodile['kr?k?da?l]n鱷魚
